How to Make Crispy Air Fryer Tofu Bowls

1. Press the tofu

Wrap the drained tofu in a clean tea towel or several sheets of kitchen paper. Place it on a board, top with a plate or pan and add a moderate weight. Leave for 15 to 20 minutes. Extra-firm tofu may need only a thorough pat dry, but removing surface moisture helps the coating stay crisp.

2. Cook the brown rice

Place the rinsed rice in a saucepan and cook according to the packet instructions, usually for 20 to 25 minutes. Drain if needed, cover and leave to steam for 5 minutes. Fluff with a fork.

3. Cut the tofu

Cut the pressed tofu into even 2 cm cubes. Similar-sized pieces cook at the same rate and give you a crisp edge in every bite.

4. Season and coat

Put the tofu cubes in a large bowl. Add the soy sauce and oil, then toss gently. Sprinkle over the cornflour, smoked paprika, garlic powder and black pepper. Toss again until no dry patches remain. Be gentle so the cubes hold their shape.

5. Load the air fryer

Preheat the air fryer to 200°C for 3 minutes if your model recommends preheating. Arrange the tofu in one layer with a little space between the pieces. Cook in two batches if your basket is small. An overcrowded basket traps steam and softens the coating.

6. Air fry until crisp

Air fry at 200°C for 13 to 16 minutes. Shake the basket after 7 minutes, then cook until the tofu is golden with crisp edges. Air fryer models vary, so check from 12 minutes and add another minute or two when needed.

7. Whisk the peanut-lime sauce

Whisk the peanut butter, soy sauce, lime juice, maple syrup, ginger and garlic in a bowl. Add warm water one tablespoon at a time until the sauce is smooth and pourable. Taste and add a little more lime for sharpness or maple syrup for sweetness.

8. Prepare the vegetables

Cook the edamame, shred the cabbage, cut the carrot into matchsticks and shave or slice the cucumber. Slice the spring onions and cut the lime into wedges. Keep the vegetables raw for maximum crunch, or briefly steam the carrot and cabbage if you prefer them softer.

9. Assemble the bowls

Divide the warm brown rice between four bowls. Add the cabbage, carrot, cucumber and edamame in separate sections. Top with the crispy tofu, drizzle with peanut-lime sauce and finish with spring onions, sesame seeds and a lime wedge.

Tips for Extra-Crispy Air Fryer Tofu

  • Start with extra-firm tofu. Softer tofu contains more water and can break during mixing.
  • Dry it well. Surface moisture works against browning.
  • Use cornflour evenly. A thin coating is better than thick, powdery clumps.
  • Leave room for hot air. Cook in batches rather than stacking the cubes.
  • Shake once or twice. Turning the tofu exposes more sides to the circulating heat.
  • Serve promptly. The tofu is crispiest soon after cooking.

Easy Variations

  • Change the grain: use jasmine rice, quinoa or rice noodles.
  • Add heat: whisk chilli sauce or chilli flakes into the peanut sauce.
  • Nut-free version: replace peanut butter with smooth sunflower seed butter.
  • More vegetables: add radish, peppers, steamed broccoli or sugar snap peas.
  • Lower-carb bowl: replace part of the rice with cauliflower rice or extra cabbage.
  • Citrus swap: use lemon when fresh lime is unavailable.

Storage and Reheating

For the best texture, refrigerate the tofu, rice, vegetables and sauce in separate airtight containers. The cooked tofu and rice keep for up to 3 days. The sauce keeps for up to 5 days and may thicken when chilled; loosen it with a teaspoon of warm water.

Reheat tofu in the air fryer at 190°C for 3 to 5 minutes. Heat rice until piping hot, adding a teaspoon of water before microwaving if it has dried slightly. Do not reheat cooked rice more than once. Add the cold vegetables and sauce after reheating.

Frequently Asked Questions

Why is my air fryer tofu not crispy?

The usual causes are wet tofu, too little cornflour, an overcrowded basket or a low cooking temperature. Pat the tofu dry, apply a thin even coating and leave space around each cube.

Do I need to press extra-firm tofu?

Not always. Some vacuum-packed extra-firm tofu contains little water and only needs patting dry. Water-packed tofu benefits from 15 to 20 minutes of pressing.

Can I bake the tofu instead?

Yes. Spread the coated cubes on a lined baking tray and bake at 220°C, or 200°C fan, for 25 to 30 minutes. Turn them halfway through.

Can I make the recipe gluten-free?

Use certified gluten-free tamari in place of soy sauce and check the labels on cornflour and every prepared ingredient.

Can I prepare these tofu bowls ahead?

Yes. Prepare all components up to 3 days ahead and store them separately. Reheat the tofu and rice, then add the chilled vegetables and sauce just before serving.

Nutrition Notes

Tofu supplies plant protein, while brown rice, cabbage, carrots and edamame add fibre. Peanut butter and sesame contribute flavour and fats. Nutrition varies with brands and portion sizes, so calculate from your exact ingredients if you follow a specific eating plan.
